5S TOTAL QUALITY ENVIRONMENT

Introduction:

The very first step to becoming a world class organization with high performance and quality is good housekeeping. All great organizations always have good housekeeping. It is the first discipline to prepare organisations for higher achievements. It should not be taken for granted and neglected. Other improvement activities will not work without good housekeeping.

Visual Management

The quickest and easiest way for top management to know if the organization is running well is through Visual Management. It is the management method of knowing what is going on by looking around. There are many methods and techniques to do Visual Management that is included when developing the housekeeping system.

Incremental Improvement (Kaizen)

Where top management is more successful in bringing about major, innovative and significant changes and improvements, the operational person, delivering the day to day requirements, is in a position to implement small steps and stages of improvements, sometimes called Kaizen. The people in contact with the day to day work can also deliver day to day improvements when the right environment and culture is created.

The environment for Kaizen is good housekeeping, often achieved by the 5S methods, that makes it possible for Visible Management to be practiced and continuous small improvements to be achieved.

Housekeeping is Not Cleaning & Arranging

There is a misunderstanding that housekeeping is keeping the place clean and properly arranged. Housekeeping is much more than that. It is about helping top management control all activities, know what is happening, minimize hazards and wastage, develop an inspiring work environment, and build a company culture of discipline and good conduct that will help in developing professionalism.
